STAY ALERT! Protect Yourself From Fraud and Scams

Scammers are getting smarter, and unfortunately, everyday consumers are often their biggest targets. With technology constantly evolving, fraudsters now use convincing phone calls, text messages, emails, social media accounts, and even AI-generated voices and messages to trick people into sharing personal information or sending money.

The good news? Knowing what to look for can help you avoid becoming a victim.

One of the biggest red flags is a sense of urgency. Scammers want you to panic and act quickly before you have time to think. They may claim your account has been compromised, you’ve won a prize, missed a payment, owe money to the government, or need to verify personal information immediately. If someone is pressuring you to act right away, take a moment and think before responding.

Another common warning sign is a request for sensitive information. Legitimate businesses, financial institutions, and government agencies will never ask you to provide passwords, security codes, online banking credentials, or complete account information through an unexpected phone call, text message, or email.

Be cautious of messages containing suspicious links, attachments, or requests for payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps. These payment methods are difficult to trace and are frequently used by scammers because recovering funds can be nearly impossible once they’re sent.

Remember that phone numbers, email addresses, and even websites can be spoofed to look legitimate. Just because a message appears to come from a trusted source doesn’t mean it’s real. Always verify requests through official channels before taking action.

To help protect yourself, use strong passwords, enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible, monitor your accounts regularly, and avoid sharing personal information on public Wi Fi networks.

If you believe you’ve been targeted by a scam, act quickly. Change your passwords, monitor your accounts for suspicious activity, and report the incident to the appropriate organization. The sooner you respond, the better your chances of preventing further damage.

At Latah Credit Union, protecting our members is a top priority. We work hard to help keep your accounts and personal information secure.

Most importantly, if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Always verify through official channels and never share personal or account information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
